Summer Solstice 2014

Summer Solstice is the day of maximum sunlight for the
Northern Hemisphere. There is another light that has captured my attention as
summer begins. It is a light seen at night. It is a magical kind of light that
has enthralled me since my childhood in the mountains. It is a living light
that dances in the darkness. It is the light of the firefly.
Fireflies are in the beetle family. They are one of
nature’s most efficient light sources. They are almost 100% efficient in their
light production. An incandescent light is only 10% efficient, the rest is
wasted heat. Firefly tells me that it is possible to give your all and live in
beauty and harmony. And, they are magnificent creatures to watch in the
evening.
Fireflies have returned to my consciousness this spring and summer in a very ‘in my face’ manner. One of my favorite childhood memories was playing in my yard and catching fireflies in a jar to create a ‘living lantern’. I know now that fireflies are at their most beautiful when they are free. I know now that this is true for every living creature.
One of my most beautiful experiences now is walking at twilight with Nance and our dog, Brie. We go to a nearby field where Brie runs and explores while we stand hand in hand watching the fireflies dance and flash around us. By re-experiencing a part of my past in a new and profound way, I find that much of my past has been redefined. The many choices I have made have led me to this moment. I don’t mean just the more positive choices, I mean every choice I have made. It is the sum total of who I am and all that I have done, that has led me to where I am today.
Summer is the growing season. Honor your past and use it as fertile ground to grow new and healthier ‘crops’ in your life. A shaman friend of mine says, “It’s all food for the Fire.” I would say, “It’s all food for the Fireflies!”
Let’s all dance and shine our lights in harmony this summer, and forever.
